Here’s something most designers won’t tell you straight: your website might be the problem.

Not because it’s ugly, maybe it’s actually beautiful. But a beautiful website that doesn’t convert is just an expensive mood board. And in 2026, your dream clients are deciding whether to reach out within the first few seconds of landing on your homepage.

So let’s talk about the five biggest signs your site is quietly turning away the clients you actually want and exactly what to fix.

1. Your homepage doesn’t say what you do in one sentence
This is the number one mistake I see on creative entrepreneur websites, and honestly? It’s the easiest to fix.

When someone lands on your homepage, they have one question: “Is this person for me?” If they can’t answer that within three seconds, they’re gone.

Vague headlines like “Welcome to my world” or “Creating beauty through design” might feel on-brand and poetic — but they don’t convert. Your dream client is busy. She’s got seventeen tabs open. She needs to immediately understand what you do, who you do it for, and why you’re the right choice.

What to do: Rewrite your hero headline using this simple formula: [What you do] + [who it’s for] + [the result they get]

For example: “Custom Showit websites for creative entrepreneurs who are ready to book more of their dream clients.”

That’s it. Clear beats clever, every single time.

2. You only have one (or zero) testimonials on your homepage

I know, asking for testimonials feels awkward. But here’s the truth: your potential clients trust other clients more than they trust you. That’s not an insult, it’s just human psychology.

When someone is on the fence about investing in a custom website, the thing that tips them over isn’t your portfolio. It’s reading that someone just like them felt nervous too, hired you anyway, and got results that changed their business.

One generic “She was great to work with!” quote at the bottom of your homepage isn’t enough to do that job.

What to do: Reach out to three past clients and ask them one specific question: “What changed in your business after we launched your new site?” Use their answer — in their exact words — as a testimonial. Include their name, a photo if they’ll allow it, and their business name for credibility. Aim for at least three testimonials on your homepage, placed near your services and your CTA.

3. Your portfolio images have no context

A gallery of pretty screenshots is a great start. But your potential clients are looking for more than pretty — they’re looking for themselves.

When your portfolio just shows images with no captions, a visitor has to do a lot of mental work: What industry is this client in? What was the brief? Is this a Showit site or Shopify? How long did it take? That mental work is exhausting, and most people won’t do it.

Your competitors who are booking out consistently aren’t just showing the work — they’re telling the story of the work.

What to do: Add a 1–2 line caption beneath each portfolio piece. Include the platform (Showit, Shopify), the client’s industry, and ideally a small result. Something like: “Custom Showit build for a wedding photographer — launched in one week, booked out within the month.” It takes five minutes per image and makes your portfolio do ten times more work.

4. There’s no clear next step anywhere on your page

Imagine a potential client who loves your vibe, reads your about page, looks through your portfolio — and then just… doesn’t know what to do next. No clear call to action. No obvious button. Just a footer with a contact link buried at the bottom.

This happens more often than you’d think, especially on beautifully designed sites where the aesthetics take over and the strategy gets left behind.

Your website should hold your visitor’s hand through a journey: Here’s what I do → Here’s who I’ve done it for → Here’s what happens when you work with me → Here’s how to get started. Every section should point forward.

What to do: Add a primary CTA button above the fold on your homepage, and repeat it at least two more times as you scroll down the page. Make the button text specific and action-oriented: “Check availability” or “Book your spot” converts better than a generic “Contact me.” Scarcity and specificity are your friends.

5. Your site isn’t showing up on Google
This one stings a little, but it’s important. You could have the most stunning website in your niche — and if nobody can find it, it doesn’t matter.

A lot of creative entrepreneurs don’t realize that the words on their website are just as important as the visuals. Your H1 (the big headline at the top of your page), your page titles, your image alt text — these all tell Google what your site is about and who should see it.

If your H1 is a poetic phrase with no keywords in it, Google doesn’t know to show your site when someone searches “Showit web designer for photographers” or “custom Shopify store designer.”

What to do: Start simple. Rewrite your homepage H1 to include the platform you design on, your target client, and ideally your location or niche. Make sure every image on your site has a descriptive alt text (not “rectangle_1120.png” — yes, really). And commit to one blog post per month that answers a question your ideal client is actually Googling. Over time, that content compounds and brings you organic traffic that works while you sleep.
